Sharks

We've been getting ready to our trip to Margate by starting to learn about sharks. We've been reading the book Surprising Sharks which is filled with fascinating facts about sharks.

Did you know basking sharks eat plankton?

What shark facts do you know?

We have also started making models of basking and hammer head sharks. Here are some photos of us using our team work skills to paper maiche our junk models.

Margate

Exciting News

We're going to Margate to visit the seaside. On Friday 15th July we're getting the coach to Margate to make sand castles, paddle in the sea, explore the pier, eat some ice creams, play on the beach and visit the gift shops on the promenade.

Would you like to come? We're still looking for helpers. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you would like to join us.

National Theatre

It's our trip to the National Theater tomorrow to perform our soundscapes and movements. We had our final rehearsal this afternoon where both classes watched each other perform.

Looking forward to seeing all our parents, carers and friends at the Dorfman Theatre  tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock.

Garden Center Trip

To start our learning on our topic Rainforest Plants we visited Croxted Road Garden Center in Herne Hill on Wednesday. We looked at all the different seed that they sold and then used our seed shopping lists to select which we should buy to grow in our Year 1 raised bed garden.

What seeds did you choose for our garden?

Why did you choose them?

Our new topic

I hope you're all having a great holiday and having lots of adventures. Has anyone been practicing running in the park?

What do you think our topic is going to be next half term?

If you could chose anything to learn about, what would you choose?

Underground Designers

Designers at work! We have been designing our own London underground train carriages.

After building our original designs we then  reflected on and talked about what would improve our carriages. After listening to our peers opinions we went on to make our carriage models even better.

What would you put in your underground carriage?

What's beneath our feet?

It's almost time to say goodbye to this term's topic. We've learned a lot about what's beneath our feet.
What's the most memorable thing you've learned this half term?

The Brixton Pound

We've been thinking about our topic next term, which is the Brixton Pound. We've been thinking about what we'd like to investigate and learn about.

What would you like to learn about the Brixton Pound?

Natural History Museum Trip

What a great day we had today at the Natural History Museum. We learnt so much about creepy crawlies and other animals. Here are some photos showing some of our best bits of the trip.
When we arrived at the museum we were amazed by
it architectural beauty.
We learnt where different mini beasts live in our house.
We went inside a model termite hill.
Investigating where ants like to live and what they like to eat

What was your best bit?

Learning from the past

Today Year 1 thought about the past and the present day. We discussed how the London Underground has changed since 1863.

Have a look at past pictures of the London Underground...
Compare these pictures with the underground today.

What is the same, what is different?

London Underground Map

Did you know the current London underground tube map was first designed by Henry Beck in 1931?
The current London tube map

We looked at the current tube map when we
visited Brixton underground station.

It shows the relative positions of all the underground stations

In Year 1 this week we had a go at designing our own London Underground Maps.
After we had designed our own maps we thought of questions that
we still had about the London underground.

What do you think of this child's map design?
