Quentin Blake

Our key text this term, The Green Ship,  is by the author and illustrator Quentin Blake.

Here is a video of Quentin Blake talking
about the power of illustration.

My favourite bit in the video was when he showed us all the different covers that he made for the Green Ship.
Which bit was your favourite?

Writing workshops on the Green Ship

We have been redrafting and improving our writing on Quentin Blake's book the Green Ship this week in our writing conferences.

Working with an adult we improved our spelling and worked on improving our writing by using our writing targets. We even  re-drafted some key sentences to make our writing even more fantastic.

What writing target have you been working on?

We can find totals!

Look how many ways we were able to make 10p!

This week we began to learn the value of coins. We can now recognise 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p.

How can you make 10p with coins?

Learning to Map Brixton

"We drew our house and then our route to school."

"I included Hollybush Walk and bus routes like the P4"

"I put Hill Mead School and my house with the train station, tube station and shops"

What can you see on your way to school?

Yummy new menu

We have all been really enjoying the new school dinner menu in Year 1 this week. Here are some photos of what we have been eating; it all looks delicious.

Martha Payne is a Scottish school girl who started a blog on what she had for her school lunch each day.

Mapping Brixton

As well as going on tours of our local area we have been studying maps of Brixton to learn about the geography of the area.

Using google street view we explored the streets around our school.

What can you see happening in this photograph?

Watch out year 1 are running

In PE this half term we are working on getting better at running. Each week we're going to go running in a different bit of Brixton. Today we went running in Brockwell park.

One Year 1 said, "We ran around the big old tree. We have even been racing up and down the hill. We ran as fast as we could."

How far do you think we ran today?

School dinners

Year 1 have been enjoying their first day back at school after half term. A highlight for many has been tasting the new lunch menu. It's official, spaghetti bolognese is a hit.

"I love school dinners. I love this (points at the pasta) and the stuff that goes on top. It's yummy."

"The best bit was the hot beans."

The Green Ship: I think....

The Green Ship

Today we looked at the front cover and blurb of our new book The Green Ship.

"I think the children will go inside the green ship and have a picnic"

"I wonder how I could be an explorer"

"I see green leaves because there are lots of trees"

"I wonder where the man who owns the boat lives?"

What questions do you have about book?

Underground Designers

Designers at work! We have been designing our own London underground train carriages.

After building our original designs we then  reflected on and talked about what would improve our carriages. After listening to our peers opinions we went on to make our carriage models even better.

What would you put in your underground carriage?

What would you like to learn about the Brixton Pound?

Natural History Museum Trip

What a great day we had today at the Natural History Museum. We learnt so much about creepy crawlies and other animals. Here are some photos showing some of our best bits of the trip.
When we arrived at the museum we were amazed by
it architectural beauty.
We learnt where different mini beasts live in our house.
We went inside a model termite hill.
Investigating where ants like to live and what they like to eat

What was your best bit?
